“COHORS” was commissioned by the Cultural Association 4’33”, which took shape thanks to an artistic residency held at the Palazzo Te Foundation in Mantova. The sextet engages in research and arrangement of Renaissance and Baroque pieces through the practice of improvisation, in a virtuosic dialogue between jazz, which constitutes one of its foundational values, and the musical tradition of European Renaissance courts.
The intertwining of seemingly disparate genres, united by the improvisational component, is enhanced by a multidisciplinary approach that includes, in addition to an ensemble of musicians drawing from both traditions, the dancer and choreographer Camilla Monga. Starting from 7 musical pieces originating from some of the most active European courts of the Renaissance, the musicians and the dancer not only work on the reworking of material from these great court composers but also create a true musical journey, alternating between written parts and improvised sections with moments of conduction.
Thanks to the DV Young grant, which the project won, in June 2023 the sextet recorded its debut album for Da Vinci Publishing.
The project has been named the winner of “Nuova Generazione Jazz 2024,” a program by I-JAzz.

Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on 30 November at 7.30pm
Age Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult 18+
The Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra celebrated their 80th anniversary in 2023 and appointed Riccardo Frizza as chief conductor in the same season. He leads the orchestra on tour with the captivating pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, a new star of the famous musical family, following in the footsteps of her celebrated elder siblings Isata and Sheku. She’s the soloist in Chopin’s best-known piano concerto. This was an immediate early career success for the young pianist-composer who poured his heart and soul into the ravishingly beautiful slow movement while all the time dreaming of the woman he couldn’t pluck up the courage to speak to.
The Orchestra have long championed the music of Hungarian composers, including Franz Liszt and Zoltán Kodály whose characterful Dances of Galánta are rooted in 19th century Hungarian and nomadic folk dances. And Beethoven’s effervescent Seventh Symphony, written in a Bohemian spa town, also dances along with a spring in its step. A favourite with audiences then as now, it is full of rhythmic vitality and joie de vivre, with a fleet-footed scherzo and an energetic finale that propels the music to its jubilant conclusion.

Becoming Nancy on 3 October – 2 November at various times
A new musical about first love and finding your voice!
Adapted from Terry Ronald’s best-selling novel – be one of the very first to catch the UK premiere of new musical Becoming Nancy!
It’s 1979 and David Starr is unquestionably one of the smartest, most talented sixth-formers in East Dulwich – he’s got a wild imagination, a vocal range to die for, and a bedroom plastered with posters of his beloved pop idols: Blondie, Sting, and Kate Bush. But being clever, with a great taste in music may not be enough to get him through secondary school, where, to his great surprise, he’s just been given the female lead in the school play, Oliver… The unconventional casting sends shockwaves through David’s small town, first with David, and then with his parents, his aunt, and his classmates.
Before long, it seems like everybody has an opinion on whether David should go on with the show, inspiring him to turn to his no-nonsense best friend Frances and his unlikely co-star Maxie, the enigmatic captain of the football team.

Bohren & Der Club of Gore on 9 November at 8pm
+ Special Guests
Supersonic Festival are delighted to welcome back Bohren & Der Club of Gore to Birmingham at the stunning Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the first time they have graced these Midlands shores since 2012.
Bohren & Der Club of Gore hold their smoky line of doom-jazz in a sublime haunting that taps into that interzone between classic Lynchian motifs and fizzing gothic undercurrents. They will be performing just a handful of UK shows.
The self-styled “doom jazz” masters were spawned in 1992 out of a mutual love of all things heavy and unholy but channelled their impulses into inspiration not influence. Bohren’s ineffable skill lies at lulling listeners into richly hypnagogic states. As they prize a deep sense of cool yearning that hearkens back to the slow burn atmospheres of classic film noir such as David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti’s soundtracks, dark ambient and the bluest jazz, plus the doom metal of Black Sabbath, Gore, and their dusty echoes in Earth.
It’s a velvet cloak for the senses; essentially a heavily tranquillising sound, but one fraught with an existential angst that’s won them a cult audience over the years.
“The band’s musical output is minimal, hanging on to notes until they vanish. They allow their instruments to inhale and exhale slowly. Time becomes immaterial.” Crack Magazine

Jonathan Silk conductor
An immersive musical experience – a sonic journey through the dystopia of Future Past.
Odd Priest is on a mission as one of the ‘remnant’ to deliver a message of hope to the ‘New World’.
Reisz ‘Odd Priest’ Amos is a multidisciplined artist from Birmingham. The former Artistic Associate of Birmingham Opera Company, he plies his trade as a theatre maker, director, singer/songwriter, and musician.
A collaboration with the University Jazz Orchestra, the performance features newly commissioned arrangements of Odd Priest’s original music, masterfully reworked by Jonathan Silk.
The Jazz Orchestra provide the perfect backdrop for this musical storytelling experience in which Odd Priest must traverse the wilderness and is forced to face his own demons.
In order to reach the promised land, there must be… CHURCH IN THE WILD.
