March What’s On For Kids In Birmingham

I cannot believe it is nearly March. This year is going by ever so fast and suddenly we find ourselves nearly at the end of February! It does mean that Spring is finally around the corner with its longer days and lighter evenings. And it is time for my roundup of events in Birmingham taking place this March. At the time of writing, all of the events I have included below have ticket availability, though obviously this may well have changed by the time you read this post.

A concert hall is ready for the next performance. Imagine that this is taken just before the doors are opened to let the audience in for a wonderful evening's entertainment.

In our fantastic city, there are always a lot of shows on every month for to choose from, many in different price brackets, and so I include a Table of Contents immediately below so you can have a quick look at all the events covered, and jump straight to the venue/show you are most interested in. In previous roundups I have included a link for each and every show on for each of the venues, but as this is making this post run very slowly, I am going to only include one link to each venue’s What’s On page. On this page you can find all of the shows listed with ticket booking information.

I have noted below those events that are free to attend. One further thing that I wanted to say before getting into the roundup itself. There are many amazing events on in our big, famous venues, shows that sound amazing – I would love to go to see Wicked at the Hippodrome, for example. However, I don’t know about your budget but mine simply does not stretch to being able to afford 4 tickets for a show like Wicked so that the whole family can go along. So, what we do as a family is look at venues like the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Barber Institute where we might go to see performances by students at both the Conservatoire and Birmingham University. The tickets to shows at these two venues can often be far more affordable – many shows are free to attend, and many others have ticket prices ranging from £5 to £12. There are also things like the Free Jazz Fridays and pre-show performances in the bigger venues in spaces such as the Jennifer Blackwell stage at Symphony Hall. The performances we have seen there have been excellent, and I would recommend you having a look at the events on there.

China Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra with Tamsin Waley-Cohen on 11 March at 7.30pm

China Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra

Daye Lin conductor

Tamsin Waley-Cohen violin

Jiapeng Nie cello

Tan DunCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (excerpts)

Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso

Chausson Poème

Respighi Fountains of Rome

RespighiPines of Rome

Excerpts from the Academy Award-winning film score for Ang Lee’s fantasy martial arts world, the popular film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, open this sumptuous programme. Tan Dun’s celebrated and atmospheric Oscar-winning score blends together Chinese ceremonial and classical music, Western and Eastern instruments, in an action-packed drama.

In the late 1970s, the fishing village of Shenzhen began its transformation into China’s third most populous city and global technology hub. Against this backdrop, the orchestra was founded and now, under the baton of famous young conductor and music director Daye Lin, represents the rich culture of Shenzhen on the world stage. Its principal honorary conductor is Tan Dun, composer of the Academy Award-winning film score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

After decades of hard work the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra has become a strong orchestral force both at home and abroad. It has spread the voice of Shenzhen on the international stage and won the respect of its peers. SZSO is recognized as one of the outstanding professional symphony orchestras in China and has become a beautiful business card for Shenzhen.

Acclaimed British violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen’s adventurous spirit will perfectly suit the sultry, gypsy character of the Saint-Saëns, and contrast with Chausson’s introspective and utterly beautiful Poème. Respighi’s lavishly orchestrated tone poems capture the very essence of Rome, both in its nature and landscape, and its history and visions. You’ll find pictures of a bustling city, pastoral scenes, the Trevi fountain, pines against a moonlit sky, and the marching tread of a Roman army along the Appian Way.

Thomas Adès: Forgotten Dances, for guitar

The first ever guitarist to be selected as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and a Gramophone magazine cover star, Sean Shibe is a creative force of nature. His questing spirit to explore, experiment and expand the repertoire has led to his own transcriptions of historical Scottish lute manuscripts, recordings on electric guitar of music from Hildegard von Bingen to Moondog, and a slew of new commissions for his instrument.

The centrepiece of his Spanish/French Camino is Thomas Adès’s first piece for solo guitar (‘Habanera’ from his opera ‘The Exterminating Angel’) which references a Spanish dance form seen through the prism of 20th century French ideas. Lady Margaret Wemyss’s lute pieces demonstrate continental relationships with the ‘Auld Alliance’ through pieces from Scotland as well as France and Spain, and there’s music by Couperin, de Falla and Mompou, whose Suite Compostelana is a homage to the Camino de Santiago.

Good Friday St John Passion 300th Anniversary with Ex Cathedra on 29 March at 2pm

Ex Cathedra Choir, Baroque Orchestra & Academy of Vocal Music

James Robinson Evangelist

Themba Mvula Jesus

Lawrence White Pilate & bass

Margaret Lingas, Katie Trethewey soprano

Mercè Bruguera Abelló, Gabriella Liandu alto

Bradley Smith tenor

Thomas Lowen bass

300 years after its first performance, Bach’s St John Passion remains as powerful and profound as it must have been in 1724. The human drama of the story – Pilate’s dilemma, Peter’s denial – plus the emotion of the characters makes this a compelling pilgrimage, whatever your belief. And then there is the supreme beauty of Bach’s music, heightened by the colours and poignancy of the period instruments – not least the majestic acceptance of ‘Es ist vollbracht’ (It is accomplished).

In this anniversary performance, we incorporate chorale preludes, motets, congregational hymns and readings to offer a richer experience of the Good Friday service as Bach knew it.

Sung in German with English surtitles.

There will be a 30-minute interval and the concert will end at approximately 5pm.

Songs of Innocence and of Experience on 21 – 23 March at 2.30pm and 7.30pm

Songs of Innocence and of Experience based on the life and work of William blake

Directed by Stephen Simms
Original music by Rob Roberts
Casting by Danièle Sanderson

William Blake was born in Soho London in 1757. By the age of eight he had seen “a tree filled with Angels” in Peckham Rye – their wings “bespangled every bough like stars”.

He was a painter, poet and engraver. Songs of Innocence and of Experience is his most famous visionary work combining art and poetry. Wordsworth thought he was insane; Coleridge thought he was a genius. He saw the world through extraordinary visions.

Mysterious, profoundly strange, subversive, but always filled with beauty and magic.

This brand new production, explores the turbulent paradise of Blake’s life, art, and visions.

Please note this event takes place at The Old Rep Theatre.

Its focus is on romantic repertoire, alongside new and contemporary tonal compositions and is intended to be, in part, a platform for composers to express their emotions in a colourfully tonal and refreshing way.

The RRO was founded with a purpose in mind: to revive romantic music in the wider classical genre, in a relevant and modern style hence, Romantic-Revival. It isn’t about eliminating the experimental, atonal or similar works, but rather about giving new, romantic music a voice alongside that.

Birmingham Savoyards: The Sorcerer on 6 – 8 March at 7.30pm

One of Gilbert & Sullivan‘s lesser-known comic operas, Birmingham Savoyards present a show that is full of fun with lots of tuneful, jolly music.

He commissions The Sorcerer to secretly administer his best selling love potion to everyone in the village. Anyone drinking the potion falls asleep and then falls in love with the first person they see on awaking.

Needless to say, the plan goes somewhat awry, resulting in some rather unexpected and mis-matched pairings! Hilarious!

University Jazz Orchestra
Jonathan Silk conductor

“Steve Banks is at his most panoramic and soaring with a tone and style caught somewhere between Steve Hackett’s fusion and Pat Metheny’s wondrousness.”
Jazz Weekly (USA)

Guitarist and composer Steve Banks brings his debut album Emboldened to Birmingham – but as it’s never been heard before. Re-voiced for our Jazz Orchestra from the original quintet by Jonathan Silk, Emboldened was released by Birmingham’s own Stoney Lane Records in May 2023.

Doors open at 19:00, with a pre-concert performance from the newly-formed Jazz Orchestral Vocal Group from 19:15 onwards.

CrossCurrents: Ives 150 – Philharmonic Orchestra on 17 March at 3pm

Daniele Rosina conductor

Charles Ives’ music pushed the boundaries in its time and still feels fresh today. Posed time and again by a lone trumpeter, The Unanswered Question is asked to a seemingly unhearing – or uncaring – orchestra on stage. Ives melds philosophy with sound to create an uneasy, contemplative piece that leaves the listener deep in thought.

At the time that Mahler was penning his Fifth Symphony and Debussy was writing La Mer, Ives created his Second Symphony – an ocean and worlds apart from his contemporaries. The soundworld Ives creates is rich and luxurious, struck through with veins of musical influences as diverse as Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and theAmerican popular music of his time.

Vaughan Williams reaches back five centuries, twisting the theme by Thomas Tallis through time, echoing through the ages in one of the most majestic works for double string orchestra.
