December What’s On For Kids In Birmingham

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially in the fabulous venues in our area of the UK. So it is time for my roundup of all the music and music based events on in and around Birmingham, UK, this December. At the time of writing, all of the events I have included below have ticket availability, though obviously this may well have changed by the time you read this post. If you live in or around Warwickshire or just like visiting for the shows on there, then come back tomorrow for Warwickshire’s What’s On post.

A concert hall is ready for the next performance. Imagine that this is taken just before the doors are opened to let the audience in for a wonderful evening's entertainment.

In previous roundups I have included a link for each and every show on for each of the venues, but as this is making this post run very slowly, I am going to only include one link to each venue’s What’s On page. Symphony Orchestra of India with Zakir Hussain on 1 December at 7.30pm

Symphony Orchestra of India

Alpesh Chauhan conductor

Zakir Hussain tabla

Niladri Kumar sitar

Rakesh Chaurasia bansuri

Strauss Rosenkavalier Suite

Hussain Triple Concerto

Stravinsky Petrushka (1947)

Representing an entire country and a population of 1.4 billion, India’s first and only professional symphony orchestra chose Symphony Hall as the launchpad for its first, highly successful, UK tour in 2019. Birmingham’s own Alpesh Chauhan guest conducts the orchestra in its return visit. His meteoric rise now sees him as Music Director of Birmingham Opera Company, Principal Guest Conductor of the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, and a regular at the helm of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

From the whooping horns of the opening, to the rapt intensity of the ‘Presentation of the Rose’ and the final rousing waltz, Strauss’s Rosenkavalier Suite shows off the orchestra in glorious technicolour. Petrushka is also an orchestral showcase as Stravinsky magically portrays the puppet characters in tales of servitude, love, jealousy and murder through music with a sinister undercurrent. This was one of the major works for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes that made Stravinsky’s name.

Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain has appeared many times at Symphony Hall and was soloist in his own tabla concerto, Peshkar, with the orchestra in 2019. Creating a fusion of Indian and Western classical music traditions, he uses the solo instruments and orchestra to the full, in a way that makes this combination seem the most natural thing in the world.

Already principal bassoon player with the WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne, Mathis Stier’s virtuosity and musicianship are beyond doubt. An accomplished soloist and chamber musician, he took home the second prize and coveted Audience Prize at the 2019 ARD Competition.

As a solo instrument the bassoon is among the least familiar to audiences, but Stier reveals a whole world of possibilities for this versatile instrument, from the courtly 17thcentury sonata of Böddecker and the rich and tonal sonorities of Saint-Saëns’s Sonata, to the contemporary sounds of Paula Matthusen’s work for bassoon and fixed media. Stier’s new commission for this tour is by Maria Sigfúsdóttir, an Icelandic composer and violinist whose band, amiina, toured and collaborated with Sigur Rós.

The Waterboys on 22 October at 8pm

Few bands have as great a live reputation as The Waterboys. From their mid-1980s “big music” period through the influential mix of Celtic, gospel and country on their classic ‘Fisherman’s Blues’ tours, to the hundreds of brilliant shows accompanying the last decade’s run of supremely in-form albums from 2011’s An Appointment With Mr Yeats to this summer’s Good Luck, Seeker The Waterboys have consistently blended tightness, inspiration and improvisation to reach heights of performance few other acts can. Led by mercurial and brilliant Scottish guitarist/vocalist Mike Scott, the 2020 version of the band features the established line-up of Memphis keyboard great “Brother” Paul Brown, ace British drummer Ralph Salmins and funky Irish bassman Aongus Ralston.

The popular reach of Waterboys music has never been greater. Their songs have been performed by artists as varied as Prince, The Killers and U2, all of whom have performed their classic ‘The Whole Of The Moon’; and Fiona Apple who masterfully recorded the song last year; Ellie Goulding, who scored a top 3 UK hit with ‘How Long Will I Love You’; indie rockers The War On Drugs, Dawes and The Mystery Jets; and classic singers Rod Stewart and Tom Jones. ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ also featured in last year’s smash Netflix film ‘Let It Snow’ and top HBO series ‘The Affair’. Waterboys music shows no sign of fading, and the best place to experience it is played by the originators in a concert hall. Come and feel the fire!

Paul Lewis: Schubert Piano Sonatas 3 on 5 December at 7.30pm

Sonata for Piano No 4 in A minor, D537

Sonata for Piano No 9 in B major, D575

Sonata for Piano No 18 in G major, D894

“Every now and again a recording comes along that makes you want to dance in the street … this is one of those instances.” In its review of Paul Lewis’s Schubert D894 sonata recording, Gramophone magazine marvelled at his confidence and sureness, his finesse and musicality. And it’s those qualities that mark Lewis out as an authority on Schubert’s piano music.

In this third recital of his survey, Paul Lewis brings his magic to three more sonatas. The first two are among six that Schubert started in 1817, a year after he’d given up a teaching post at his father’s school to become a freelance composer and was full of hope and expectation for his burgeoning career. The lilting drama of the A minor’s first movement and simplicity of the song-like second, written in March, give way to a more developed ‘Schubertian’ style in the lively D575, written in August. Contrast that with one of his most original sonatas, the much later D894. Robert Schumann, who did much to champion Schubert’s works after his death, called this sonata “the most perfect in form and substance”.

The Furrow Collective on 7 December at 8pm

As the bleak winter nights draw in, The Furrow Collective have chosen a special festive programme to celebrate the dark time of year. Come in, friends, from the howling wind and bitter frost, draw a little closer to the roaring fire and prepare to be bewitched by eerie story-songs and seasonal carols that revel in the strange and wonderful traditions of these isles.

The Furrow Collective is an English/Scottish band consisting of four talented and individually prominent performers: Lucy Farrell (viola, voice & saw), Rachel Newton (harp, fiddle, voice), Emily Portman (banjo, concertina, voice) and Alasdair Roberts (guitars, voice).

With The Furrow Collective’s signature spine-tingling harmonies and masterful storytelling bringing a spark of light into the wintry gloom, this promises to be an unmissable evening to remember.

The group formed in 2013, drawn together by a shared love of traditional song and balladry of the England, Scotland and beyond and an open, intuitive approach to collaboration. In recognition of their innovative approach, The Furrow Collective were awarded the accolade of 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ‘Best Group’, hot on the heels of the release in late 2016 of their second album, Wild Hog (also on Hudson Records).

The Furrow Collective tours extensively throughout the UK as well as in mainland Europe, delighting audiences with their uniquely beguiling approach to traditional song.
