November has arrived and it is very definitely Autumn. The nights are drawing in and we are starting to see Christmas lights, and even the odd festive show appearing in our venues. It is time for my roundup of all the music and music based events on in and around Birmingham, UK. At the time of writing, all of the events I have included below have ticket availability, though obviously this may well have changed by the time you read this post. If you have previously read my roundup of events you will know that I usually include venues from the surrounding area, like Warwick and Solihull. I have decided to split these What’s On posts up into 2 separate posts, one for Birmingham and one for Warwickshire, just because there are so many events on! So if you are looking for events in Warwickshire, you may want to check out the post linked immediately below:
What’s On For Families In Warwickshire – November
There are always a lot of shows on every month for to choose from in our splendid part of the country, and so I include a Table of Contents immediately below so you can have a quick look at all the events covered, and jump straight to the venue/show you are most interested in. In previous roundups I have included a link for each and every show on for each of the venues, but as this is making this post run very slowly, I am going to only include one link to each venue’s What’s On page. On this page you can find all of the shows listed with ticket booking information.

Welsh National Opera: Ainadamar on 7 November at 7.30pm
‘What a sad day it was in Granada. The stones began to cry.’
Ainadamar, Arabic for ‘Fountain of Tears’, is the ancient well near Granada where the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca – labelled by the Falangist militia as a ‘homosexual socialist’ – was brutally executed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.
Golijov’s twice-Grammy-winning opera reimagines Lorca’s life through a flashback of memories by his muse and collaborator, the actress Margarita Xirgu, now in her final moments in 1969 Uruguay, as she seeks to pass her generation’s hopes and passion on to her student, Nuria.
Ainadamar promises a spine-tingling spectacle from the Olivier-winning star choreographer Deborah Colker (Rio 2016 Olympics Ceremony; Cirque du Soleil) in her much-anticipated operatic debut in the director’s seat.
The result is a dazzling kaleidoscope of music, dance, and theatre where flamenco meets opera through traditional Spanish singing and sumptuous operatic numbers, all interspersed with rhythmic, sonic, and poetic outbursts. Ainadamar invites you to experience opera like never before.
Sung in Spanish, with surtitles in English.
Welsh National Opera: La Traviata on 9 – 11 November at 7.30pm
What would you give up for love?
Always the belle of the ball, Violetta, the most elegant courtesan in all of Paris, has her choice of wealthy admirers falling at her feet. She lives for the glamorous lifestyle of high society, but when she finds herself deeply in love with the penniless aristocratic poet Alfredo, she is willing to give everything up for him. Can she be accepted just as a woman who has fallen in love, or is she to remain a ‘fallen woman’ whose love has no future?
Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel, La Dame aux Camélias, Verdi’s timeless opera features some of the most evocative arias and melodies including the instantly recognisable Brindisi (the drinking song) and the beautifully poignant finale, Addio del passato. Elegant and highly charged, WNO’s five-star production will leave you in no doubt why this heart-wrenching tale of thwarted love, scandal and self-sacrifice makes La traviata a favourite with audiences across the world.
Sung in Italian, with English surtitles.

We’re also delighted to host in various sites across the theatre the Freefall 21stAnniversary Exhibition (14 November – 2 March). Women of the Windrush on 23 and 24 November at 7.45pm
Through mesmerising music and seamlessly woven archival and film footage, Shirley J. Thompson’s celebratory opera, Women of the Windrush, portrays inspirational narratives from the lives of women who travelled to the UK from the West Indies between the 1940s and the 1960s, when persons from those countries were invited by the British government to assist in the rebuilding of post-war Britain.
The stage work is a re-imagining of Thompson’s film, Memories in Mind: Women of the Windrush Tell Their Stories (1992, British Film Institute). The renowned Birmingham-based soprano, Abigail Kelly, leads the performance.

Brahms 3 with the CBSO on 1 November at 7.30pm
Programme
Haydn Symphony No.96 (Miracle), 21mins
Ligeti Violin Concerto, 29mins
Brahms Symphony No.3, 37mins
Running time This concert will last approximately 2 hours
An evening of miracles, wonders and glorious melodies.
“Free but Happy” was Brahms’s motto, and he coded it into the very notes of his lovely Third Symphony. Back in the 18th century, meanwhile, Haydn’s 96th Symphony was such a hit with the British public that they called it a “miracle”. Conductor Nicholas Carter shows you why tonight, and joins violinist Carolin Widmann in the sonic wonderland of Ligeti’s Violin Concerto. Expect sounds like you’ve never imagined.
Free Jazz Fridays: Bryan Corbett’s ‘Ready for Freddie’ Quartet on 3 November at 5pm
A highly skilled and interactive quartet that helped to bring the music of Freddie Hubbard to life in a series of colourful interpretations of some of the trumpeter’s most enduring compositions, led by renowned Trumpet & Flugelhornist Bryan Corbett currently with The Brand New amongst a long list names from the jazz and commercial world.
Co-led by the outstanding bassist Tom Hill (also the voice of ‘Tony the Tiger’ and numerous adverts, computer games and videos). An exciting mix of swing and groove this quartet celebrates the music of the late great legend Freddie Hubbard who recorded and played with almost every American jazz star between 1960-90. The Quartet also features the very highly regarded Al Gurr (Rhodes/Piano) and Nick Millward (Drums).
As Birmingham City Organist since 1983 – only the seventh post-holder since 1834 – he has had a major influence on Birmingham’s musical life, and this concert celebrates a remarkable 40th anniversary with a typically captivating programme. There’s Baroque brilliance in Bach’s ‘Great’ Fantasia and Fugue; fiendish difficulty for both hands and feet in Edwin Lemare’s transcription of Wagner’s ‘Rienzi Overture’; and Liszt’s ‘Fantasy and Fugue’, based on music from Meyerbeer’s opera ‘Le prophète’, which made an emphatic case for the organist as a concert performer, not solely a church musician.
Free, ticketed event.

Mendelssohn Symphony No.3 (Scottish), 40mins

In October and November this year Teenage Fanclub will be heading out on an extensive UK / European tour. What is unique about this tour is that for the first time ever the band will play a tour of all seated venues.
Commenting on the tour, Raymond McGinley from the band says: “Following our most recent album Endless Arcade we did a UK / Europe tour in support of that. While it felt great to be properly back on the road again post-pandemic, we realised that for many of the venues we’d been playing those same places over and over for more than thirty years. We thought that next time we should try to do something a bit different. As part of that tour we played a couple of seated venues and enjoyed the experience. We got the feeling that the audience did too.”
Far From Saints on 15 November at 7.30pm
There are few phenomena more powerful and mysterious than two voices naturally drawn together. When Kelly Jones (leader of the legendary Welsh band Stereophonics) and Patty Lynn met backstage during a U.S. tour in 2013, they hardly knew each other but sensed an undeniable musical chemistry. Six years later, they proved their theory in a U.K. studio – and Far From Saints were born.
An entirely new band with a cross-genre sound that will appeal to fans of country, rock, folk, soul, and Americana, Far From Saints touch on themes of love, perseverance, self-doubt, and self-healing. It’s a record that, much like the band itself, was created over an unadulterated love of music and collaboration. Far From Saints is honest, real, and brimming with integrity.
MultiPiano Ensemble: Rachmaninoff in Forty Fingers 16 November at 7.30pm
RachmaninovRussian Rhapsody for 2 pianos
ScriabinFantasy for 2 pianos
RachmaninovSuites Nos 1 & 2 for 2 pianos
RachmaninovRomance & Waltz for piano in 6 hands
MedtnerRound Dance for 2 pianos
ArenskyPolichinelle for 2 pianos
MultiPiano describe themselves as a “unique modular piano ensemble” and it’s easy to see why: from one piano with four hands to several pianos in a variety of multi-hand combinations, they are as fascinating to watch as they are to hear. The Israeli ensemble have been performing and recording their way through repertoire from Mozart to Shostakovich and attracting international attention from the very first note, with tours across North and South America, Europe and the Far East.
They mark the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninov’s birth with several of his major works for two pianos, including the brilliant and virtuosic Russian Rhapsody, a set of variations from an 18-year-old composer, and the unashamedly romantic Suite No 1 which hints at its dedicatee, Tchaikovsky. Suite No 2 was one of the first works written after the devastatingly critical reception to his First Symphony three years earlier and is characteristically lyrical, with a demanding tarantella. Interspersed are more wonders from this golden age of multipiano music with Medtner’s charming Round Dance, Arensky’s vivacious Polichinelle (the commedia dell’arte character, Pulcinella) and Scriabin’s Fantasy that’s both wistful and stormy.

Boris Gitburg Plays Rachmaninov on 23 November at 7.30pm
Boris Giltburg piano
RachmaninovPrelude in C sharp minor, Op 3 No 2
Preludes, Op 23
Preludes, Op 32
Perhaps the most romantic of all composers, Sergei Rachmaninov’s gorgeous piano concertos are among the most popular in the repertoire. But the glorious melodies often belie the fiendish difficulty of his music. Rachmaninov could famously stretch well over an octave and his technical abilities went far beyond that of most pianists.
With his “vivid skill, colour and poetry” (Guardian), Boris Giltburg is the perfect interpreter of Rachmaninov and his recording of the Complete Preludes has won high critical praise. He’ll bring all his sensitivity and panache to these exquisite miniatures – 24 pieces in each of the major and minor keys with as rich a variety of character and mood as you can imagine – beginning with the early Prelude in C sharp minor that was demanded as an encore by audiences wherever Rachmaninov appeared.
“Two of the Preludes were the beginning of my own discovery of Rachmaninov, and I fell in love, completely and hopelessly,” says Giltburg.
Come and be enchanted.

Internationally acclaimed musician Brian Cummins brings this stunning show celebrating the music of Jeff Lynne and E.L.O. with a band of amazing musicians including a female string section this will be a fabulous night of hit after hit from such a vast back catalogue.
Jeff Lynne and ELO famously carried on the legacy of The Beatles where in the band’s own words wanted to “Carry on from where ‘I am the Walrus’ left off’ and combined Classical music with motifs of the greats with Rock and Roll like no other musician before. After many years of touring Jeff parted ways with the band to focus on producing some of the greatest musicians of the time namely, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney and The Beatles.
Jeff resurrected the ELO legacy in 2014 with a new line-up and a mammoth stage show and has been touring the World Arenas and stadiums to this day.

“Cohen takes a softly devious approach reminiscent of Lee Konitz – but, as with the canny Cool School veteran, the quietness is deceptive and the subtlety is in the weighting of phrases and the hipness with which she plays off the rhythm section.”
Plus there will be short sets from four exciting new bands from across the UK specially selected for the conference.

Global Traditions: An epic double header of FLOOK and URBAN FOLK QUARTET
Urban Folk Quartet will be launching their eagerly awaited 7th album before the iconic Flook bring their virtuosity to the stage for the first time at RBC. We are delighted to be able to present these legends of the Irish and British folk scene.
Brian Finnegan whistles and flutes
Sarah Allen flutes and accordion
Ed Boyd guitar
John Joe Kelly bodhránTaking inspiration from their roots in the Irish and English traditions, Flook have an enviable trademark sound, weaving and spinning traditionally rooted tunes over precise acoustic grooves, with a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. There is certainly no shortage of virtuosity amongst the members of Flook, but the unique impact of this band stems from the wholly intuitive, almost symbiotic, exchange between the various flutes, frets and skins.
Urban Folk Quartet (special album launch show)
The Urban Folk Quartet’s distinguishing features have much less to do with the traditional idea of genre. Yes, this is fiddle-led music that draws heavily from celtic dance forms and traditional song but from there on in it is unlike any folk band you have ever heard. Just as English country dance unassumingly met with big band jazz musicianship in the mid 20th century, The UFQ’s approach to the folk ethos is to embrace any and every influence that genuinely makes sense of their time and place and makes sense in their music. From funk grooves to middle-eastern melodies, afrobeat to north Indian rhythms.

Joe Broughton fiddle, mandolin, guitar
Dan Walsh banjo, guitar
