July and August What’s On For Kids In Birmingham

Traditionally theatres and concert halls tend to be quite quiet places over the summer months with very few events on. There are a few reasons for this – for one thing a lot of people who could make up audiences are on holiday. There are festivals on that their audiences want to go to. And having spent 10 years working in theatres and concert halls, they tend to be very hot, sticky places with no air conditioning, or little air conditioning, and they aren’t necessarily where you want to spend an evening. Having said that, there are indeed only a few events on at most venues, with the exception of Symphony Hall, and to an extent Birmingham Town Hall, where there are loads of events on mostly as part of a couple of festivals – the Music for Youth Festival this coming weekend and Birmingham Jazz Festival in early August.

So I have decided to combine both July and August for this month’s roundup of events. I am, as usual, just focussing on events in Birmingham and the surrounding areas, but will quickly say that if you do want to take your children on to a concert or musical theatre performance, shows are on in London’s West End. In fact Official London Theatre’s Kids Week, named because it originally ran for one week but is now a month long offer where children under 17 can go free for certain West End musicals, is running throughout August. It went on sale a few weeks ago so there will be fewer tickets available now, but it would be worth having a look if you have a musical theatre fan in your household. You can find a link to Kids Week information here:

Official London Theatre’s Kids Week

I would also like to point out that the proms festival is on at the Royal Albert Hall in London from 14 July – 9 September. Tickets are on sale now, but if you haven’t been able to get hold of tickets for as particular prom (with the exception of the last night) and you don’t mind queueing for several hours – seriously some people queue for hours and hours and hours) – then you can always try queueing up for “Promming” or standing room tickets in the Royal Albert Hall’s Gallery or Arena areas. There are loads of concerts on during the Proms Festival, for families perhaps the most notable events are Prom 10 – Horrible Histories: ‘Orrible Opera on 22 July and CBeebies: Ocean Open on 23 July both at Sage Gateshead, Prom 25: Relaxed Prom on 3 August and Prom 57: Fantasy, Myths and Legends. If you want to book tickets for any of the proms and don\’t fancy standing outside the Royal Akbert Hall to try and promenda

Right, now it’s time for my roundup of music-based events for children in Birmingham and the surrounding areas for the next 2 months . At the time of writing, all of the events I have included below have ticket availability, though obviously this may well have changed by the time you read this post. I include a Table of Contents immediately below so you can have a quick look at all the events covered, and jump straight to the venue/show you are most interested in.

B:JazzFest: Shanty Town – A Tribute to Ruth Kokumo Noah on 9 August at 5pm

On December 9th 2022, we lost Ruth Kokumo Noah after her ongoing journey with Lupus and Sickle cell. Ruth was the most beautiful soul; a loving daughter, sister, auntie, friend, artist, musician and the brightest light in our community.

If you have been in Birmingham over the past few years it is highly likely you will have heard of Ruth, and her ever evolving collective of musicians; The Ark. Up until last summer, Ruth and her band were all over Birmingham, gearing up for festivals and the many gigs that were flowing their way. If there was a gig to be played or a jam to jump on, you would find Ruth there, commanding any stage like a true lionness.

On stage, she was at home, she was in control. There she could share her music, songs, poetry, transcendant energy and her unforgettable voice and presence which was undeniably comparable with that of the greats. Ruth would have audiences in the palm of her hands, feeling every single emotion with her, from heartbreaking vulnerability to roaring fearlessness. She was and will always be a force of nature.

Considering everything Ruth battled on a daily basis, this was clearly where she took back control, and it was breathtaking, every single time.

Ruth wasn’t only generous on stage, it was in her day to day life too; her adoration for her family, being the most supportive friend, the art she created, her mental health and music work, the events she hosted creating safe, warm enviroments for her community to gather, share their creativity and express themselves and of course the work she did for the charities she supported; The Sickle Cell Society and Lupus UK. Ruth made time for people, made people feel loved and heard, and wanted everyone to succeed with her.

Ruth Kokumo Noah constantly reminded us to count our blessings. Our greatest blessing was to have had this sensational, kind, hilarious, talented soul as part our community, in our family. Your light will continue to shine through all of the art you have created, the treasures you have left behind and the souls you have touched, you will never stop inspiring us.

To be asked to celebrate Ruth and pay tribute to her is an honour. It was difficut to know where to start, but one of the many things that Ruth taught us was how to respond to what life throws at us, even when it is incredibly unfair. So, if we are following in Ruth’s footsteps, then coming together as a community, with her family and friends, to create and celebrate Ruth’s life and everything she shared with us feels like the most natural thing to do. We will keep dancing to your songs!

For this performance we will be collaborating with members of The Ark, close friends of Ruth, Birmingham based musicians and artists and Shanty Town Collective to perform a selection Ruth’s original material, plus songs by some of the great artists Ruth was inspired by and original music from some of Ruth’s close friends.

Free ticketed event.

B:JazzFest: Olivia Murphy’s Jazz Orchestra on 9 August at 7.30pm

Emotion, narrative and honesty have always been key elements that make Olivia Murphy’s music so personal and unique. Her compositions are unravelling stories inspired by both her lived history and imagined fantasies and she has found jazz orchestra – the fusing of through-written material on a large scale and improvisation – the most effective way for these tales to be told. Murphy conducts this large ensemble made up of 20 of the most exciting emerging improvisers and musicians from both the London and Birmingham creative music scenes – two cities that have been integral to her musical development so far. The orchestra’s debut gig was on a sold-out Birmingham Symphony Hall Stage, funded by the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, and four tracks from the recorded concert were released in late 2022 as part of their EP “Somewhere, Not So Far Away”. Olivia and her orchestra are looking forward to returning to Birmingham for a rare opportunity to perform together, premiering new compositions and arrangements alongside material from the first OMJO EP.

Nashville Sounds In The Round: Gasoline & Matches, Luke Flear, Matt Hodges & Robyn Red on 19 August at 11.30am

Award winning annual country music festival Buckle & Boots is known for showcasing the best of country and offering a beautiful setting for festival goers at White Bottom Farm in Stockport! They are joining forces with Birmingham’s premier country songwriter night ‘Nashville Sounds In The Round’ to bring some of this year’s Festival talent to the iconic Symphony Hall in partnership with B:Music! Hosted by Two-time British Country Music Association ‘Duo of the Year’ Gasoline & Matches, artists are invited to tell the stories behind their songs in a Bluebird Café style ‘In The Round’ session, stripping the songs back to their origins and transporting the audience right back to the writing rooms.

Gasoline & Matches

Gasoline & Matches are a high energy, multi-award winning, dual fronted British band combining close harmonies, melodic guitar licks and serious musicianship. Fronted by Birmingham natives Sally Rea Morris and Stephen Marks, they are fierce entertainers known for their tongue-in-cheek and much-loved song “Never Have I Ever” described by Bob Harris as “Clever, funny, totally original…and it’s Country!” They built momentum after multiple spins on BBC Radio 2, and never fail to get festival goers on their feet to participate in the infamous drinking game which inspired the song. As resident hosts of Nashville Sounds in the Round, their Bluebird Cafe style songwriter round at Birmingham Symphony Hall, it’s clear to see their contribution & influence on Country and Americana music in the Midlands.

Luke Flear

Luke Flear incorporates the bounce of pop-rock, the grit of the Blues and the soul of Americana into a Classic Country soundscape. Born in Leeds, England, Luke has been consistently performing across Europe from the age of 15 and made his move into the Country Music Scene the summer of 2022. Every instrument you hear on record is played and produced by the 21 year old himself, with Luke’s debut album exploring countless themes of ambition, addiction, love and hate, currently taking to many stages and festivals across the UK Country world.

Matt Hodges

Matt Hodges is a singer songwriter from Wakefield, West Yorkshire who is making his mark on the UK country music scene. Matt has been showing his class and talent on the live music scene in the UK, Europe and the USA over the last 10+ years. The pandemic was a blessing in disguise for Matt, despite losing access to performing live, he found the chance to concentrate on original music and released his debut single ‘How Could You’ in October 2020 which soared on the iTunes UK Country Charts. His next three singles, ‘Forever With You’, ‘When We Were Young’, and ‘Proud To Be Me’ all peaked at No 1. on the iTunes Country Charts.

Robyn Red

In a busy renaissance of the country genre, Glasgow-based Robyn Red leads the way as one of the most exciting young talents in the UK – a claim backed up by a number of accolades. After a trip to the States to pick up gold at the World Championship of Performing arts, Robyn won consecutive Writer of The Year Award’s from Country Gigs Scotland. Doubling up with Young Female Artist of The Year in 2022. In March 2022 Robyn Red shared the Hydro Arena with Luke Combs and Ashley McBryde at Country 2 Country. The country pop maverick then took her crowd capturing acoustic arsenal across the UK. The latest of many festival performances in Millport intersected the busy rooms from Aberdeen to London, then graced the legendary King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut and Liverpool’s Cavern Club – twice in the former. Amid the 2022 landmarks, Robyn Red released her debut single in June. ‘Like a Bullet’ gained the number one spot on Amazon’s country chart while reaching third on iTunes’. The melodic summer anthem, bathed in country twang, with over 60,000 streams is greatly received live to faithful crowd – setting the scene for a breakthrough 2023.

Midland Arts Centre (MAC)

MAC is a multi-purpose venue, meaning that there is an art gallery both a separate gallery space and one around the cafe areas, workshop spaces, a theatre, a cinema, and other performance spaces. It is also located in Canon Hill Park making it a great place for a day out. It is definitely worth having a look through their website to see if there is something for you and your child(ren) to enjoy. It is worth saying, before I get into the one off events that are on at this fabulous venue, that over the summer months MAC have many, many courses on for children and young people, and they look fantastic.
